Masculinity, Homosexuality and the Defence of Islam : A Case Study of Yusuf al-Qaradawi?s Media Fatwa  / Scott Kugle, Stephen Hunt.

Religion and Gender, 2 (2012) 2, p. 254-279
bron: Religion and Gender jaargang: 2 (2012) 2 , p. 254-279
samenvatting: This paper analyses how Islamic Neo-traditionalists perceive gender constructs through a distorted view of religious texts and cultural conventions. It explores the ramifications of these constructs for attitudes towards same-sex orientations and relationships. These themes are discussed with reference to a case study of a TV talk show on 5 June 2006 by one conservative scholar-activist, Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, whose teachings have an impact in the Middle-East and on Muslim minorities in the West. The paper will demonstrate how al-Qaradawi articulates his views of homophobia as part of an agenda to reinforce perceived threats to Muslim masculinity.

Sexual and Gender Diversity in the Muslim World : History, Law and Vernacular Knowledge  /

samenvatting: Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity is forbidden in contemporary international human rights law, yet in many interpretations of Islamic law, this is seen to contradict the tenets of Islam. Vanja Hamzic here offers a path-breaking historical and anthropological analysis of the discourses on sexual and gender diversity in the Muslim world. The first of its kind, the book sheds new light on the understanding of diversity and resistance to hegemonic visions of the self in Muslim societies. Combining first-hand ethnographic accounts of Muslims in contemporary Pakistan including the hijra community whose pluralist sexual and gender experience defy the disciplinary gaze of both international and state law with new archival research, this book provides a unique mapping of Islamic jurisprudence, court practice and social developments in the Muslim world. Hamzic provides a comprehensive look at the ways in which sexually diverse and gender-variant Muslims are seen, and see themselves, within the context of the Islamic legal tradition.

De omgang met homoseksuelen in de Nederlands joodse gemeenten anno nu  / Ory Six.

Utrecht: Universiteit Utrecht [UU], 2013 - 63 p.+ bijl.
uitgave: Utrecht : Universiteit Utrecht [UU], 2013 - 63 p.+ bijl.
onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. jodendom
  2. homoseksualiteit

Islam and Homosexuality : Religious Dogma, Colonial Rule, and the Quest for Belonging  / Shafiqa Ahmadi.

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development, 26 (2012) 3 (spring), p. 705-724
bron: Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development jaargang: 26 (2012) 3 (spring), p. 705-724
samenvatting: It is widely believed that homosexuality is forbidden in Islam. However, a distinction should be made between homosexual acts and homosexual persons. Under the laws of some Islamic countries, homosexual acts are considered a crime and are punishable by death or by isolation, if not actual criminal proceedings. Being a homosexual person and not publicly acting on homosexual feelings, however, is within the bounds of the law in many Muslim countries. These distinctions create a serious clash between Islam and homosexuality. Regardless of whether homosexuality in Islam is indeed a crime, the experience of LGBT individuals must be viewed from multiple perspectives in how the LGBT community is treated differently within the Muslim community and by those outside of the Muslim community. Analyzing discrimination through a single-axis framework marginalizes those who are multiply-burdened; that is, analyzing Muslim LGBT individuals' experiences as just Muslims, or just LGBT, only marginalizes this community that is multiply-burdened by religion, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and gender identity and expression. This article's focus is the intersection of these identities and how our current understanding of Muslims who belong to the LGBT community is narrowly defined or, at times, non-existent. In order to give voice to this marginalized community, this article utilizes the concept of intersectionality as derived from Critical Race Theory (CRT).

Same-Sex Intercourse Involving Jewish Men 100 BCE-100 CE : Sources and Significance for Jesus' Sexual Politics  / Christopher B. Zeichman.

Religion & Gender, 10 (2020) 1, p. 164-179
bron: Religion & Gender jaargang: 10 (2020) 1 , p. 164-179
samenvatting: It is commonplace in New Testament scholarship to assume that Judaism at the turn of the Era univocally condemned same-sex intercourse among men, whether scholars use this supposition to argue that Jesus felt likewise or was uniquely accepting of the practice. The present article provides the original-language text, English translation, and brief commentary for evidence of same-sex intercourse involving Jewish men around the turn of the Era, pointing to the varying testimonies of Josephus, Martial, a graffito, Tacitus, and the Warren Cup. The paper concludes with a reflection on the relevance of the study for understanding Jesus' sexual politics. This article contains graphic literary and visual depictions of sexual intercourse.
